The News 13th August 2010
East Hampshire’s MP to chair all-party group on credit unions
Local MP Damian Hinds is to chair the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Credit Unions, following the Group’s AGM. Damian said: This is set to be an exciting time for credit unions with the new opportunities from liberalisation, and of course a much sharpened focus on debt as an issue at all levels. I hope we will see much growth in the sector, and there is partnership potential too with the Post Office. Credit unions like our own United Savings & Loan in Bordon provide a crucial service, encourage saving and promoting affordable, responsible credit.
On his own involvement, Damian said: The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Credit Unions can play an important role supporting the sector in its growth, reaching out to more customers. It is a great opportunity to work with MPs from right across the House of Commons in a collaborative way.
Nicky Barham, manager of United Savings & Loans in Bordon, said: Credit unions go from strength to strength. Especially after all that has happened in the last couple of years, people are really attracted to a not-for-profit community-based financial institution like ours. We’re a great way to start saving, and a responsible, affordable source when you need a loan.

Financial Services Compensation Scheme
Important information about compensation arrangements.
We are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).The FSCS can pay compensation to depositors if a credit union is unable to meet its financial obligations.
Most depositors – including most individuals and small businesses – are covered by the scheme.
In respect of deposits, an eligible depositor is entitled to claim up to £50,000. For joint accounts each account holder is treated as having a claim in respect of their share so, for a joint account held by two eligible depositors, the maximum amount that could be claimed would be £50,000 each (making a total of £100,000).
The £50,000 limit relates to the combined amount in all the eligible depositor’s accounts with the credit union, including their share of any joint account, and not to each separate account.
For further information about the scheme (including the amounts covered and eligibility to claim) please ask at your local branch, refer to the FSCS website www.FSCS.org.uk or call 020 7892 7300 or 0800 678 1100.
